Google To Unveil Broad New Social Product Tomorrow

Google is planning to unveil a broad new social product on Tuesday that will integrate with at least two existing Google products. Some details emerged earlier today on the Wall Street Journal (“a new feature that makes it easier and faster for users of Gmail to view media and status updates”), but our understanding is that the product goes well beyond a Gmail integration. As I wrote last night , there is still a lot of room for improvement in online social services. Status updates, photo and video sharing, review and location based content are not only decentralized today, but are becoming overwhelmed with spam and other noise. The Google event begins at 10 am. Flixster Gets A Thumbs Up From Investors, Raises $12.5 Million

Movie ratings site Flixster raised $12.5 million in new funding, according to an SEC filing . The last time Flixster raised money was a $5 million Series B in April, 2008. The new round brings the company’s total capital raised to $19.5 million. Flixster operates both a Web site and a companion iPhone app, which is the most popular movie app in the App Store. The iPhone app lets consumers find nearby movies, add their ratings, and buy tickets. In January, the company bought Rotten Tomatoes from News Corp for an undisclosed sum. The combined reach of the two movie review services is 30 million people, according to the companies. The new capital could be tied to the purchase. According to the filing, the first sale of securities in this round was on December 31, 2009, just a few days before the deal closed. Flixster probably used the money, at least in part, to finance the acquisition. CrunchBase Information Flixster Information provided by CrunchBase

“This Is It” commemorative hard drive

Nothing like a commemorative hard disk to remember one of the greatest pop stars of all time. At least, that’s exactly what Samsung was thinking when they thought up this one. Now when people ask you what that gaudy gold contraption on your desk is, you’ll have an answer other than censored from last night. Under the hood, you get a S2 Portable HXMU050DA, with 500 GB capacity on USB 2.0. Oh, and a DRM locked copy of This Is It. Don’t worry, you’ll also get a little voucher with the activation code you need to watch it. Heaven help you if you want to burn it to a DVD to watch anywhere other than on your computer. I’m not completely sure if this is designed as an “Oh, here’s a free copy of this movie with your hard drive purchase” sort of thing, or a “Hey, I really want a copy of this movie. Might as well get a hard drive with it!” Either way, units will start moving on February 24th for $123 a pop. [ GadgetReview ]

Peter Molyneux will piss you off with Fable III info next week

Is Peter Molyneux the video game industry’s Dana White , talking trash at every turn for seemingly no reason? I’d say so, yes. He’s going to show off more of Fable III at next week’s X10 event in San Francisco. He told Gamereactor that you’ll be “pissed off” by what he reveals. Peter Molyneux: promoter extraordinaire. The full quote is: We’re making some announcements about Fable III and there’s some… Wow, there’s some very, very big things happening in Fable. Bigger than you think. And it’s going to really upset people. I’m really scared when I go out and tell people what it is they’re going to get super pissed off, they really are. But it’s the right thing to do man, I’m sure it’s the right thing to do. Maybe he’s going to make a halfway decent game for a change?! (I kid: I actually really enjoyed Fable , and liked the several hours or so that I played Fable II .) Actually, I have no idea what Mr. Molyneux is talking about, not having finished Fable II . Maybe he kills off a main character? Any and all ideas can be left in the comments, but please don’t call each other names. It’s not civil. via Eurogamer

Motorola DROID to be blessed with Android 2.1 in coming update

When the Nexus One was announced, many folks were questioning Google’s game plan and why it would release such an amazing device shortly after the Motorola DROID. If that wasn’t enough to make some DROID owners envious, the Nexus One received a multitouch update last week which allowed pinch-to-zoom gestures within Google Maps, the Android browser and photo gallery. What could possibly quell all this Nexus One envy? Read the rest of this entry at MobileCrunch> >

MEETorDIE Quantifies The Cost Of Wasteful Meetings

Company meetings are a nearly universally hated thing. No matter what line of work you’re in, most are simply a waste of time. And even when they’re important and necessary, they’re still likely inefficient. A new startup aims to show you just how wasteful they are. MEETorDIE is an online tool that asks you to put in information about your meeting, including what company you work for, what industry you’re in, how big the company is, how long the meeting is, and who is attending. When you submit that information, you’re taken to a page that shows how much money your company wasted with that meeting. Below that, you can see the aggregate statistics for how much money your company has wasted on meetings total. Depending on how wasteful your meeting is, MEETorDIE’s mascot, Goolah, will be shown in different precarious situations incorporating imagery from other popular startups, such as Foursquare and Twitter. More importantly, MEETorDIE suggests how the money being wasted during these meetings might be better spent, such as donating money for drinking water for Africa. On the main page of the site you can also see other people around the world bitching about their meeting. And anyone can comment anonymously on these meeting notes. MEETorDIE calculates the amount of money being wasted by pulling information from a number of online resources including the Department of Labor. If your company is in their database, they can also pull the average salaries for the people in the meeting to give you an accurate estimate on how much money your company is wasting. MEETorDIE is the first project by the Mountain View-based bootstrapped startup Vaporware Labs . The company was started by former EA and Apple employees.
